Sunlight converts plastic waste to hydrogen fuel

Photoreforming

On dropping the photocatalyst cadmium onto the plastic and immersing the plastic in an alkaline solution, irradiation with sunlight reduces water from the solution to hydrogen while the plastic polymers simultaneously oxidise to small organic molecules. It is the photoreforming process.

A new method is now opening up new possibilities

The molybdenum and sulphur are placed randomly on a membrane which is made up of graphene. Graphene is probably the best known of the 2D materials – a crystal with a thickness of only one atom layer consisting of carbon atoms arranged in a honeycomb lattice. The randomly arranged molybdenum and sulphur atoms are then manipulated in the electron microscope with a fine electron beam. The same electron beam can be used simultaneously to image the process and to initiate the crystallization process.
